Changes are afoot here at our home. We have put a moratorium on the television for one week. I use the term television loosely and it includes all media entertainment. Since Monday we have not turned the TV on, and boy! what a difference!! We had dinner at the table (first time by ourselves, I am pretty sure!), we looked at each other and talked as opposed to eyes glued to the screen. We were both relaxed after a day at work. We got time to exercise, AND the curtains which have been sitting for 3 months waiting to be put up were finally up.
Truly, my cup runneth over.
I should probably have listened to hubby when he suggested before we got married that we should never buy a TV in our house. Neither of us had one before. But then I was by myself for 7 months after we got married, and I could not at that point stomach the idea of not having a TV. It seemed a little unnatural to me. I wanted some sounds about the house. Also I had all these gift cards to Best Buy from the wedding that I felt I had to spend.
We are seriously thinking about extending the moratorium to something more permanent. Like TV only for weekends or something. Both of us are really enjoying this TV free week. We get to read more, sleep earlier and do more productive things.
Try it, if you are up to it. It makes a big difference!!

We were without anything but super-basic cable for 8 years. That's one of the things we gave up when I quit teaching. We didn't have many channels, and we were okay with that.
A couple of months ago, we decided to go ahead and order Verizon FIOS cable. In addition to costing us more per month, I'm not really as into it as I thought I'd be. I figured I'd watch a bit during the day while I do boring tasks like folding laundry. But I'm so used to not having the TV on in the day that I find I'm still not turning it on.
We are enjoying a greater selection of channels (we're loving BBC America and Sci-fi), but we're still not watching it all that much.
I'm sort of regretting paying for this now. I really don't want TV to be that important in our house, and I almost feel like we have to have it on more just to make the higher cost worth it.
I almost envy you right now. ;-)
It does make a huge difference! I nearly stopped watching TV (only watch selected movies) and I've never been happier. TV is a huge time-eater and what pushes information down our throats much more violently than internet or newspapers, I think.
I am really impressed with your tv hiatus. Isn't it amazing how much more you talk? We do enjoy certain tv shows but we tivo our favorites and watch them on our schedule. Its amazing how much time we save. I have recently started on turning off the tv during the day and I love it!! I have been so much more productive in my work day.
Wow! I am impressed! Hubby and I are thinking of doing the same thing, but just aren't quite there yet. As of January, we are getting rid of cable, so that will be a step in the right direction.
Good luck!
I watch almost no TV during the summer, and by the time fall approaches I'm always so excited for my shows to return. Why? So that I'll have something to say to my hubby again. We always choose shows that we can watch together, and it's a genuine source of bonding - we dissect the shows after they're done and just spend time in conversation - instead of blogging/playing computer games, which is what we're doing right now.
I don't regret not having TV! I'm glad you're enjoying such nice results from your decision. :)
