By the sweat of thy brow

I have the opposite of a green thumb. I generally manage to lovingly kill all the plants and flowers in the house. It is a special talent which I am not very proud of. So I started with this whole gardening thing apprehensively. But guess what?

Our very first homegrown tomato!

Here it is in the vine. If you look closely, you can see the other one too (green).

And then the solitary bean. We had more, but I used it in a dish that I prepared.

We had guests the weekend before we left for vacation. I gave them some of homemade yogurt and homemade mango pickle becasue they said they loved it. I felt so housewifely. It was a special moment for me becasue I remembered the many times I had gone to houses of family friends and distant relatives when I was a single adult living thousands of miles away from home. The ladies would feed me good food and before I leave they would pack me some mango pickles, some chutney powders etc which I could use as a side to food. And when I handed them the food I somehow felt I had come full circle.

The tomato was SO YUMMY! We had a store tomato on the side and it tasted absolutely horrible beside my homegrown one. And now I am all excited about converting the entire backyard into a garden. And we have a fairly big backyard. I already have plan in my head of how it is going to be. I had no idea that gardening would be so exciting. But I guess it is literally seeing the fruit of your labor that makes it worthwhile. Or maybe becasue life afterall began in a garden.

We tried two tomato plants in containers on our porch, and they are the first plants I haven't killed. And they have tomatoes! Still green, but we're looking forward to it.

I had no idea gardening was so much fun, either -- my head is full of plans for whenever we get a house (years away) and a big garden. :) I suspect 4 tomato plants is all my patio will hold.

All the plants I was attempting to grow got drowned by the flood. *sigh*

You're blogging again!!! (I'd have known that earlier if I actually made use of my Google reader.)

I'm feeling ashamed. I tried growing plants. I even posted about it. And now almost everything is dead, while all the other bloggers' plants are actually growing and producing stuff.

Good for you, though!

I should probably just stick to keeping animals alive. I'm actually quite good at that.

What fun! Gardening is such an enjoyable venture, especially when it's of the edible variety. :o)
